The famous Lt. Colonel William Barret Travis Letter from the Battle of the Alamo, dated February 24, 1836, was printed in color and produced to its exact size. The original document is part of the Texas Library & Archives Collection in Austin, Texas. New color photographic transparencies were produced in December of 2001. The final printing was completed on January 19, 2002 in Jasper, Texas.
The Publisher, James K. Mitchell, Jr. of Historical Document Reproduction, Inc. of Jasper, Texas, handled the process using two Texas Companies, Color Separation, Inc. of Houston, Texas and Jasper Printing Company of Jasper, Texas. Funding for this historic undertaking was provided by The American Legion Post 78 of Jasper, Texas, the Freedom Documents Fund, Inc. of Jasper, Texas, the Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation of Houston, Texas, the Strake Foundation of Houston, Texas and the Summerlee Foundation of Dallas, Texas.
The first printing of the Travis Letter Prints was of four thousand units. The First Edition of one thousand serial numbered Prints are being held for a donation program offered through The American Legion Post 78. The remaining Prints are being distributed by Freedom Documents Fund, Inc. at no charge to all of the Junior High Schools in Texas through the twenty Texas Regional Education Service Centers maintained in locations across the State of Texas.
In addition, the new Prints will be supplied to major museums and libraries in Texas. The Daughters of the Republic of Texas, who maintain and preserve the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, have received the Travis Letter Prints. The famous appeal "To the People of Texas & all Americans in the world" is linked forever with the Alamo and they both continue to provide Texans and all Americans with a sense of pride and respect for sacrifice, honor and dedication to country .In this regard, the Travis Letter remains a treasure for our time and a beacon from a distant past, that inspires all those who fight against tyranny, and oppression in the world.
